Ripples are the spreading, pervasive and usually unintentional effect resulting from a catalyst object. Whether a giant leap into a pool, or a small pebble tossed into a simple puddle, you will see ripples. All it takes is one simple touch of the water to cause change to the existing area. Our children, our family, our testimony will naturally create ripples in the lives of those around us.
I love the story of Lazarus in the New Testament. How precious this man was to Jesus. Upon hearing of his death, we see a heart-felt sadness well up in Jesus that leads him to tears (John 11:35). Moved to respond, Jesus goes to the tomb of his dead friend and miraculously calls him out and brings him back to life. Lazarus was transformed from death to life by the healing power of Jesus. He was forever changed, obviously!
But beyond Lazarus, there must have been a ripple affect like none other! Imagine how his sister, Mary, must have been moved by this encounter. When I put myself in her shoes, imagining my once dead brother being brought back to life, I am convinced that my faith, my perspective on life, the way I treasure and treated my loved ones would forever be changed. Not to mention, radically increase my faith in Jesus!
Not only was Mary affected, but others put their faith in Jesus once they heard of Lazarus’ encounter with Christ (John 11:45). Lives were marked by the work of Jesus in this man’s life. And I believe the same is and will be true of our children. As God works in our children, in our families, there will be a ripple affect that impacts lives for eternity.
